Chandigarh, July 11: Marking the ‘unprecedented’ increase in Minimum Support Price of kharif crops, Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed a rally at Malout in Muktsar district on Wednesday. Coming as it did months before the 2019 general elections, the Kisan Kalyan Rally was the perfect platform for Modi to enumerate his government’s schemes for farmers. While lauding farmers’ initiatives to increase productivity, Modi also reminded the gathering how it was his government that had fulfilled its promise to the community. In contrast, he said, the Congress never valued farmers of appreciated their contribution. He said, “In the last 70 years, most of the times the party which our farmers placed their faith in did not recognize their hard work. Attacking the Opposition, he said they couldn’t see farmers progress.  He said his government was committed to increasing farmers’ income by 2022.  He said the hike in MSP had already taken a huge burden off farmers’ shoulders and they were more confident of their produce. Jointly organised by the Shiromani Akali Dal and the BJP, the Kisan Kalyan Rally was touted as the farmers’ way of thanking Modi for his “bold and decisive” step to “implement the Swaminathan Commission report” which called for 50 percent profit on input cost.
