Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday laid the foundation stone for development projects worth more than Rs. 7,300 crore in Churachandpur, Manipur. This is his first visit to the state since ethnic violence broke out in May 2023. The projects include the Rs. 3,600 crore Manipur Urban Roads, Drainage and Asset Management Improvement Project, five national highway projects worth over Rs. 2,500 crore, the Manipur Infotech Development (MIND) project, and the setting up of Working Women’s Hostels at nine locations.
Arriving in Churachandpur, a district mainly inhabited by the Kuki community, PM Modi also interacted with local residents and students who greeted him with portraits. Addressing the gathering despite heavy rain, the Prime Minister praised the people of Manipur for their courage and resilience. “Manipur is the land of courage and determination. These hills are a priceless gift of nature, and they reflect your hard work. I salute your passion,” he said.
He added that poor weather forced him to travel by road instead of helicopter, but the experience turned into a blessing. “What I saw on the roads—youth and elderly carrying the Tricolour—was unforgettable. This moment will stay with me forever,” he said.
PM Modi reaffirmed the Centre’s commitment to Manipur’s growth. “The culture and traditions of this land reflect India’s strength. The very name Manipur has ‘Mani,’ meaning jewel—and this jewel will shine even brighter to enrich the entire Northeast,” he said.

“I would appeal to all organisations to move forward on the path of peace and fulfil their dreams. Today, I promise you that I am with you, the Government of India is with you, the people of Manipur. After inaugurating a series of infrastructure projects in Mizoram, Prime Minister Narendra Modi took aim at the opposition, accusing them of indulging in vote-bank politics.
“For years, some parties only cared about regions with more votes and seats. Because of this, the entire Northeast, including Mizoram, was left behind,” Modi said.
Highlighting his government’s different approach, he added that communities which were long ignored are now being placed at the heart of development efforts.

PM Modi inaugurated Mizoram’s first railway line and flagged off the state’s maiden Rajdhani Express connecting Aizawl with Delhi. The Rs 8,070-crore Bairabi–Sairang railway line, considered one of the most challenging in Indian Railways’ history, was sanctioned in 2008-09 and construction began in 2015.
The line includes 45 tunnels, 55 major bridges and 87 minor bridges. Bridge No 144, near Sairang, is taller than Qutub Minar at 114 metres. It is the tallest pier railway bridge in the country, an official of the Northeast Frontier Railway said.
The route also features five road overbridges and six underpasses, covering four main stations — Hortoki, Kawnpui, Mualkhang, and Sairang — apart from Bairabi.
The direct rail connectivity between Mizoram and the rest of the country will offer the people of the region safe, efficient, and cost-effective travel options.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the Bairabi-Sairang railway line in Mizoram on Saturday, connecting Aizawl with the rest of the country for the first time. During his visit, PM Modi will flag off three trains, including the Sairang-Delhi Rajdhani Express, and unveil multiple projects to enhance highways, sports, and energy infrastructure.

As per the official press release, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will reach Churachandpur at around 11:30 am on Saturday.
He will begin his visit by meeting Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs).
He will lay the foundation stones for several infrastructure projects and address a public gathering at the State Peace Ground.
Later, at about 2:00 pm, the Prime Minister will travel to Kangla in Imphal.
There, he will again interact with IDPs.
He will inaugurate and launch development projects both in Manipur and outside the state.
He will also address another public gathering.
The projects include foundation works worth around Rs. 7,300 crore, while infrastructure projects worth Rs. 1,200 crore will be inaugurated in Imphal, which is a Meitei-majority area.
PM Modi is also expected to interact with people displaced by the Meitei-Kuki conflict and still living in relief camps. An official statement said Modi’s planned engagements were “in line with his commitment to inclusive, sustainable and holistic development of Manipur”.
