Jalandhar: Inaugurating a science event at a private university here on Thursday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi couldn’t have stressed the need for better technology, research and the importance of science enough as he added ‘Jai Vigyan’ and ‘Jai Anusandhan’ to the age-old slogan of ‘Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan’.

PM Modi was speaking at the 106th edition of the Indian Science Congress being held at Lovely Professional University. He spoke about the crucial role our institutions played in shaping our future. He said, “It is through our modern temples of science that India is transforming its present and working to secure its future,” he said.

However, he added, the industry had to play a complementary role in helping startups just as scientists needed to address the problems plaguing us. He said, “Industry must now contribute by providing timely direction, vision, mentorship and partnership to the startups. Our Scientists must commit themselves to address the problem of affordable health-care, agriculture productivity and food processing.”

Agricultural science has shown major improvement by way of increased productivity yet more was required to meet the needs of ‘New India’. In this direction, PM Modi said, our focus should be on cheaper technology for incorporating Block Chain, AI and Big Data in agriculture.

PM Modi said that Indian scientists couldn’t anymore restrict themselves to being competitive but they needed to excel. Mere competing wasn’t enough, he said. “Research for the sake of research isn’t enough, you need to raise the bar so that you become leaders,” he said.

Adding that it was time for convergence, PM Modi said the need was for strong pathways to commercialisation. “We should catalyse, harness and manage change for the nation’s prosperity,” he said.

“Any country’s intellectual creativity and identity are by its history, art, language and culture. There is a need for research with a fusion of arts and humanities, social sciences, science and technology innovation,” said PM Modi.
