New Delhi, Aug 11: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday welcomed Venkaiah Naidu as the 13th Vice-President of India. Heaping praises on Naidu, the Prime Minister said that Venkaiah is the first Vice-President of India who was born after India attained Independence.

Expressing confidence that Naidu will work for all, Modi said that as Naidu has been in the House for so long, he knows how Rajya Sabha functions. “A Rajya Sabha Chairman as experienced as Venkaiah Naidu will only guide us towards betterment,” the PM said.

Taking his address further, the Prime Minister said in Rajya Sabha, “Venkaiah Naidu belongs to an agricultural background. He is the son of a farmer and hence, he can understand the problems faced by the farmers in a better way (Kisaan khet khaliyaan ki samasya acchi tarah samajhte hain).” He also said that during his tenure as the Rural and Urban Development Minister, Venkaiah Naidu always talked about the growth of the rural areas.

Praising Naidu for his art of alliterations and his oratory skills, the PM said, “Amal karo aisa sadan mein, jahan se guzre tumhari nazrein, udhar se tumhe salaam aaye.”

Meanwhile, Leader of Opposition Ghulam Nabi Azad said “We are proud to have a Chairman from a humble and a rural background and I must salute the strength of democracy and the Constitution that enabled one and all to rise through the ranks and reach here.”

He also added that Naidu has not only risen within the party, but also otherwise. “You are now the Vice President of the country and we all look up to you for proper guidance,” he said.

President Ram Nath Kovind administered the oath of office to Venkaiah Naidu on Friday. The National Democratic Alliance candidate defeated the opposition candidate Gopalkrishna Gandhi with a thumping majority. The 68-year-old BJP leader from Andhra Pradesh got 516 votes out of the total 771 votes cast while Gandhi could only manage 244 votes.
