Washington, June 27: It was bonhomie on full display as Prime Minister Narendra Modi met US President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump on Monday at the White House. While Modi shared handshakes and hugs with Trump, he also invited his daughter Ivanka Trump to India. Modi invited Ivanka Trump to lead the US delegation at the Global Entrepreneurship Summit in India. Trump said that Ivanka has accepted Modi’s invite and will be visiting India.
“PM Modi invited my daughter Ivanka to lead US delegation to the global entrepreneurship in India, and I believe she has accepted the invite,” Trump said during the joint statement. Modi also invited Trump to visit India with family.
In their first meeting, Trump and Modi shared warm hugs, smiling handshakes and called each other ‘true friends’. Issuing a joint statement after a 2-hour meeting, Trump said he valued Indian culture and also heaped praises on Modi. “The relationship between India and USA has never been better than this. It’s a great honor to welcome leader of the world’s largest democracy to the White House. You have a big vision for improving infrastructure and fighting corruption,” he said.
Meanwhile, Modi said that US and India were both global engines of growth. “Our talks are a significant moment in the cooperation between our nations. They have been very important talks: PM Modi. Eliminating terrorism is among the topmost priorities for both nations. Trade, commerce and investment are imp areas. Technology, innovation and knowledge economy are also areas we are looking at,” Modi said.
However, there was no word on H1-B visa during the joint statement. It remains to be seen where this meeting takes the ties between the two countries. It will also be interesting to see how the global media reacts to the bonhomie between Trump and Modi.
