New Delhi, Mar 12: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will flag off Swachhagraha Express, an exhibition train from Bihar’s Motihari to commemorate 100 years of the Champaran Satyagraha. The train which will be launched next month will promote the spirit of cleanliness, or Swachchata, a value close to Mahatma Gandhi’s heart.
In order to create awareness about cleanliness and in the run-up to the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi in 2019, the 14-coach train will be launched by the Indian Railways on April 10, 2018.
All About Swachhagraha Express
The train will showcase the cleaning activities undertaken by the government up till now as part of the Swachh Bharat Mission and will travel in six months to 60 stations across the country.
Swachhgaraha Express will essentially touch secluded stations through its course of travel and its itinerary is being finalised as of now.
“The purpose of the Swachhagraha Express is to reach out to far-flung areas, creating awareness about cleanliness, which was also a key element of the Champaran movement,” a senior official associated with the project said.
The train would mark a comprehensive account of the achievements under the Swachh Bharat Mission and elaborate upon crucial subjects such as water, hygiene and sanitation. The Railways play a decisive role in the Swachh Bharat Mission and therefore, various measures were taken to improve the cleanliness of stations which were announced in successive budgets since 2015.
