Bhopal, Apr 24: Madhya Pradesh Home Minister Bhupendra Singh on Tuesday blamed ‘porn’ for rising cases of child rape and molestation. He added that his government in the state was contemplating a ban on porn in Madhya Pradesh. “We think the reason for rising number of child rape and molestation cases is porn. We are contemplating banning porn in Madhya Pradesh, will approach Centre in the matter,” Singh said as quoted by ANI. His statement comes amid furore in the state over the horrific rape and murder of a 4-month-old baby girl in Indore.

A four-month-old baby was raped and murdered in Rajwada area of Indore during wee hours on April 19. Following the complaint of the victims’ parents, the Indore police have arrested victim’s uncle in connection with the crime. Officials say that the accused had an argument with the mother of the baby and committed the crime to teach her a lesson.

Earlier last week, Union Minister Santosh Gangwar stoked up a controversy as he said that people should not make a fuss over one or two rape incidents. Calling rape incidents as unfortunate, he asserted that such cases cannot be prevented sometimes.

The Union Cabinet on April 21 approved an ordinance to award death sentence to rapists of children below 12 years of age. In a number of measures to strengthen the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, the Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved the promulgation of the Criminal Law (Amendment) Ordinance, 2018, for effective deterrence against commission of rape, thereby instilling a sense of security among women and especially young girls in the country.
