New Delhi, Feb 16: Even as a political storm is brewing over the arrest of JNUSU president Kanhaiya Kumar, leader of Communist Party of India Prakash Karat, joined a growing chorus of voices criticising the government. Karat on Monday termed the arrest as an attack on the freedom of expression by the government. Karat also attacked Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh for relying on an unverified Twitter account for facts and claiming that the student protests at JNU had the backing of Lashkar-e-Taiyabba leader and masterming of 26/11 Mumbai teror attacks Hafiz Saeed.

“Its nothing to do with University issues, its directly state intervention to suppress freedom of expression in University campuses”, said Karat. Taking an extremely defiant tone, he said, “We don’t accept their (government’s) definition and version of nationalism. If they call us anti-national we wear it as a badge of honor”. He added by saying, “Filing cases against elected student leaders under sedition charge, that’s declaring war against Indian States. It is a political matter.” Also Read: JNU row: Amit Shah hits out at Rahul Gandhi for supporting Anti national activities

On Monday, Amit Shah had hit out at Rahul Gandhi for supporting ‘anti-national’ activities at the university, reminding him of the time that Indira Gandhi had declared Emergency during the rule of Congress. In a blog, Shah had said, “No citizen can accept that a terrorist is favoured and anti-India slogans raised at a prestigious university of the country. But the kind of statements that Rahul Gandhi and his party colleagues have delivered at the campus proves that there is no place for national interest in their thinking.”
