Jaunpur, January 30: A pregnant woman was allegedly turned away by doctors in Shahganj city in Jaunpur district of Uttar Pradesh for not having a bank account and Aadhaar card. The woman delivered baby at the gate of a medical centre in Shahganj on Monday.

Her husband claimed that they were sent back as they did not have some documents. “When we went to the hospital the staff sent us back saying they won’t admit her. She asked for some documents which we didn’t have, so she sent us back. As soon as we moved out she gave birth at the hospital gate,” her husband said.

The medical superintendent said that the doctor referred her to a district hospital. But as she experienced labour pain, she was immediately brought in and the baby was delivered, he added. “Doctor referred her to District Hospital. When she was referred, she told us that she will be taken there by someone she knew. When she reached the gate she experienced labour pain. She was immediately brought in and her baby was delivered. They are safe now,” the medical superintendent said,
