Hyderabad, May 11: As speculations rise on the next President of India ahead of Presidential polls, Andhra Pradesh Opposition YSR Congress has said that it will support the Bharatiya Janata Party on its choice, according to reports. This came after YSR Congress chief Jagan Mohan Reddy met Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday and assured his support to BJP’s President choice.
According to reports, during the 40-minute meeting, Reddy told PM Modi there should not be a contest for such a high constitutional post like that of the President and the choice should be unanimous. “We will support any candidate the BJP fields as we have very less difference in opinion. Except for differences on the land acquisition bill and special status for Andhra Pradesh, we share similar opinions on various issues which we think are pro-people,” Reddy said.
“Also, the BJP has enough support for its candidate to win. Opposing their candidate and fielding another will not make sense,” he said.
This meeting comes at a time when speculation is rife that the YSRC will have an alliance with the BJP in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. reports say that Reddy holds the Congress responsible for his arrest in a disproportionate assets case and is now mending ties with the BJP.
Meanwhile, the Deccan Chronicle says that the TDP has hit out at PM Modi for giving and appointment to Reddy to meet him. “How can the Prime Minister give appointment to Jagan when he is facing several criminal and corruption charges,” asked a senior TDP functionary, according to the Deccan Chronicle report.
