New Delhi, June 13: The Presidential elections will be held during the Monsoon Session of Parliament. A month-long Parliament session is likely to commence from July 11 and end around August 10-11, sources said.

The Presidential polls will take place on July 17 and counting on July 20. The President is elected by an electoral college that’s formed by 776 Parliamentarians and 4,120 legislators. The total strength of the electoral college is 10,98,882 votes and the halfway mark is 5,49,442 votes.

The value of MPs’ votes is uniform but it varies for MLAs according to the population of the state as estimated during the 1971 census. MPs have the highest value — 708 — for each vote.

President Pranab Mukherjee will demit office on July 25 and Vice President Hamid Ansari will complete his second tenure in August.

The sources said the session was slightly being advanced because of the Presidential election in which MPs and MLAs are voters. A session at that time will ensure that all the MPs are in Delhi, where they usually vote in Parliament. An MP can also vote in his home state where MLAs generally vote.

The Cabinet Committee on Parliamentary Affairs is likely to meet in the coming days to take a final call on the dates, the sources said.
