Chennai, May 18: The Indian National Congress has had to face humiliating defeat in 2016 Assembly Elections, except in the Union Territory of Puducherr, where they won a surprsing 50% vote share. The party won 15 seats out of 30, whereas Jayalalithaa’s AIADMK won just four seats, after grabbing a spectacular win in the state of Tamil Nadu, where it won 72 seats, and is leading on 60 others. Meanwhile, there the scene is reversed and the Congress just won six seats and is leading in another two seats. In Puducherry, the All India N.R. Congress emerged as the second most powerful party.
The AINRC has won eight seats in the state, with two seats going to the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagham and one going to an Independent candidate. Congress contested on 21 seats and won 15 out of them- a win that was the only saving grace of the party, amidst an otherwise disappointing preformance by the party, in all the rest of the states. The Grand Old Party was deposed from Assam, where Tarun Gogoi lost and Sarbananda Sonowal, who is also the Union Sports Minister, under the Narendra Modi government. In Kerala, the Left Democratic Front has been elected to power, with Aschuthanandan leading it. Interestingly, the party had been defeated in the 2011 elections by th AINRC, which was formed by N Rangasamy, after he broke away from it and rode to victory in Puducherry. Finally, with the 2016 win, the party avenged its defeat against AINRC, which was reduced to a meere eight seats. V Ramachandran was the independent candidate, who, backed by the People’s Welfare Alliance (PWA), defeated Congress heavyweight E Valsaraj in the constituency of Mahe.
