New Delhi: India’s road infrastructure has undergone a remarkable transformation under the Narendra Modi government. Under the leadership of Nitin Gadkari, the Ministry of Road Transport has launched numerous projects that have reshaped the nation’s infrastructure. The country’s road network is expanding at an unprecedented pace, with high-quality roads now reaching even the most remote areas, from dense forests to towering mountains. It is often said that the better a country’s road network, the faster its progress.

The Pune-Mumbai Expressway is the country’s first expressway, built between Mumbai and Pune. This expressway cuts the travel time between the two regions drastically. Every day, thousands of people use this expressway to save time. The Pune-Mumbai Expressway is the country’s first six-lane highway and the most expensive one.

In 2002, the then Prime Minister, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, laid the foundation stone for this expressway. However, it took 22 years for the authorities to complete this project. Some sections of it were opened for traffic as early as the year 2000. Its length is merely 94.5 kilometers. It starts from the Kalamboli area of Navi Mumbai and ends in Kiwale, Pune.

• The expressway reduces the travel time between Mumbai and Pune from 3 hours to just 1 hour.
• The speed limit on this expressway is 100 km per hour.
• Thanks to this expressway, traveling between Mumbai and Pune has become easier.
• During the journey, you get to witness the beautiful view of the Sahyadri mountains.
• The route passes through tunnels and underpasses. It has been constructed by the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC).
• The Mumbai-Pune Expressway is the most expensive expressway in the country.
• Talking about toll plazas on this expressway, four-wheelers like cars and jeeps have to pay a toll of ₹320 for a one-way journey.

Mini-buses and tempos are charged Rs 495 for a one-way trip. The toll rate for buses is ₹940. Likewise, double-axle trucks have to pay Rs 685, three-axle trucks are charged Rs 1,630, and multi-axle trucks have to pay Rs 2,165 as toll tax for a single trip.
