Chandigarh, March 11: The results of Punjab assembly elections 2017 will be declared today. Election Commission of India is scheduled to initiate the counting of votes in the morning at 8 AM. The poll pundits were firm that the incumbent alliance of Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) would face a complete rout. The post-poll surveys predicted a neck-to-neck fight between the Indian National Congress and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). Punjab went into polls on February 4, with all 117 seats in the frontier state being contested in a single phase. The major electoral issue in this round of elections was the drug menace in Punjab, with AAP and Congress alleging that more than 70 per cent of state’s youth have been turned addicts. Both the parties vowed to break the nexus behind drug racket within one month of coming to power. AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal and Congress’ CM candidate Capt Amarinder Singh reiterated accusations against Akali Dal leaders of profiting from the drug menace. Apart from the rampant drug abuse, the agrarian distress was another solid poll plank for AAP and Congress. Fueling the anti-incumbency against Akali Dal-BJP regime, both the parties accused chief minister Parkash Singh Badal of betraying the farmers of Punjab. Kejriwal, the Delhi CM, pointed the difference between compensation amounts offered to farmers of his state by AAP government and the compensation provided by Badal regime to farmers of Punjab. Congress’ Capt Amarinder Singh went ahead to promise complete loan-waivers to farmers if Congress comes to power. Calling his promise realistic, Amarinder reiterated that no assistance from Centre is required to waive off the farm loans. Among the urban electorate of Punjab, the issue of dwindling employment figures, lack of industrial and corporate jobs in the state, along with corruption were some of the major issues. To woo the voters of this segment, AAP highlighted the steps taken by Kejriwal government in boost development. The party promised favourable environment to traders, small and medium business enterprises, as well as a conducive environment for big market players. Congress, while including the promises made by AAP, also stated that his government would provide one job per family, or at least Rs 2,500 in terms of allowance to family of unemployed.
According to pollsters, AAP left a mark among the rural voters of Malwa region, where cotton farmers were aggrieved against the Badal regime. The party is expected to win majority of its seats from the Malwa belt, comprising of 69 assembly seats. However, the psephologists claim that AAP failed to surge ahead of Congress in most of the urban pockets. The stacks are further raised against AAP in Doaba and Majha regions, where the party’s cadre strength is not as strong as Malwa.

Results of Punjab assembly elections 2012
In the 2012 Punjab assembly polls, the SAD-BJP alliance ended up surprising the poll pundits. For the first time in over two decades, an incumbent government in Punjab succeeded in defying the anti-incumbency in polls. Akali stalwarts pin hope in voters to once again prove the pollsters wrong. However, none of the pre-poll surveys in 2012 had opined such decimation of Akali-BJP combine, as they have predicted in this round of elections.
In the previous polls, SAD-BJP alliance upped its tally from 63 to 68. SAD emerged as biggest gainer, taking its tally from 48 to 56. On the other hand, Congress was reduced from 46 to 44.
