Chandigarh, December 13: A bus allegedly owned by a leader of the Shiromani Akali Dal, killed a minor girl on the Lambi-Gidderbaha road at Channu village in Lambi Assembly segment in Punjab on Saturday . In reaction to the incident, angry locals set the bus on fire, as a sign of protest. The incident occured on Saturday evening and the matter caught intense heat, when the police allegedly fired on a crowd that was protesting against the incident on Saturday.
The bus is owned by SAD’s Gidderbaha constituency in charge-cum-chairman, District Planning Committee, Hardeep Singh ‘Dimpy’ Dhillon. The victim, Arshdeep Kaur, was a class 8 student, who was crushed under a private bus, at around 5.30 pm on Saturday. When the locals caught a whiff of the incident, they gathered together and first vandalised the bus and then blocked the road by placing the girl’s boy in the middle. The enraged locals demanded the arrest of the accused, who had managed to flee the spot after the incident. The locals then started attacking the windows of another bus of the same transport company. The girl had been standing at a roadside, when the bus ran her over and she was killed on the spot, locals alleged. The girl’s parents are both small time workers. The situation was tense as the police refused to register a case against the accused until the case was filed. However, till now, no case has been registered. Congress spokesperson RS Surjewala, told ANI that the incident occurred in chief minister Prakash Singh Badal’s constitutency and alleged that the police assaulted the protesters and fired in them.
