New Delhi: Union Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad on Monday hit out at Congress president, accusing him of “sabotaging India’s security”. Addressing media outside Parliament, Prasad went on to ask Rahul Gandhi if he was lobbying for Eurofighter jets instead, said media reports. He added that Rahul could not deny his ties with Christian Michel, the middleman in the high-profile VVIP chopper scam. “The name of the ‘leading family’ had figured in both chopper scam and this deal that the UPA should have signed,” said Prasad. He said it was the Congress’ history that no defence deal was signed unless there was a deal with the party.
He added that AgustaWestland middlemen were also lobbying for Eurofighter jets.
Earlier in the day, Prasad’s colleague and Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman had said that the doubts raised by the Congress over her statement on Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) contracts were ‘incorrect and misleading’. The clarification itself came after Rahul accused her of providing false statements on contracts given to defence public sector unit HAL.
Rahul had also alleged that the Minister had ‘lied’ in Parliament that government orders worth Rs one lakh crore were provided to HAL. Soon after Sitharaman’s statement, Rahul again said, “Today, Nirmala Sitharaman lied in Parliament. I’m again requesting the Defence minister and PM Modi to answer, ‘Did Air Force and Defence ministry senior officers object to your interference in Rafale deal? Please answer in a Yes or No’.”
He added that Sitharaman had earlier said that Rs 1 lakh crore was given to HAL, “We challenged that and today she said that Rs 26,570.80 crore was given to HAL… Nirmala Sitharaman ji lied in Parliament.”
