Rahul Gandhi ‘dual citizenship’ case referred to ethics panel of Lok Sabha, BJP MP Mahesh Giri seeks answers

New Delhi, January 6: East Delhi MP of Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) Mahesh Giri on Wednesday sparked a new row of controversy by submitting a written complaint on Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi’s dual citizenship to Speaker of Lok Sabha Sumitra Mahajan. She has referred the case to ethics committee of the Lok Sabha, headed by BJP veteran L.K. Advani.

Giri in his complaint had requested the Speaker of Lok Sabha to take a look at the issue carefully, as if the case is true, then it comes comes under the purview of breaching the trust of Constitution and the people of India who have voted him to power. The BJP leader has asked that the Congress leader should clear his stance on the issue. He said, “I have seen the documents where Rahul Gandhi filled out that he is also a British citizen.” He further added, “I felt this was wrong, as Rahul Gandhi is a MP and vice-president of Congress. The BJP lawmaker from the eastern part of the national capital raised several questioned in his report that was submitted to Mahajan. Giri said that being a respectable citizen and a mass leader, why did Gandhi hide his “dual citizenship” in the Election commissions form. He said, “Why did Rahul Gandhi hide the “dual citizenship” aspect in EC Form? Country has the right to know about the citizenship of their MP, that is what I wrote to LS Speaker about.”

However, Congress said that all the allegations against Gandhi are false and baseless and they do not want to comment on the issue. A couple of months back too, similar allegations were put forward by senior lawmaker Subramanian Swamy who called Rahul Gandhi a British citizen.
