New Delhi, January 5: Congress President Rahul Gandhi on Friday hit out at the Bharatiya Janata Party for delaying the Lokpal Bill even after being in power for over three-and-half years. The Congress lost the 2014 Lok Sabha elections badly on the allegations of corruption and anti-corruption crusader Anna Hazare led the protest demanding the Lokpal Bill.
“Four years have passed but the Lokpal has not been implemented. The people are asking till when the false claims will be made. Are the ‘defenders of democracy’ and ‘harbingers of accountability’ listening?” Rahul tweeted.
The Gandhi scion retweeted Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s tweet of December 2013 in which he praised Finance Minister Arun Jaitley and External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj “for playing a proactive role” in “passing Lokpal Bil”. The Bharatiya Janata Party was in opposition then.
Earlier, Hazare had alleged that the Modi-led government has weakened the Lokpal Act. “Former prime minister Manmohan Singh rarely speaks, but he had also weakened the Lokpal law (when it was framed).
“Modi has further weakened the law by presenting an amendment in Parliament on July 27, 2016 through which a provision was made that relatives of (government) officers including wife, son, daughter and others will not have to submit details of their properties every year,” Hazare had said.
Attacking the Modi government, senior Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad said, “This new trend since the last three-and-a-half years wherein Union Cabinet minister are being given work of election committees and campaigning. It is not good for the democracy and the development of the country.”
