New Delhi, November 24: Soon after the debate over intolerance got ignited as Padma Vibhushan Aamir Khan expressed his dissatisfaction on the steps taken by the ruling Narendra Modi government, political comments have started to pour in slamming the Bhartiya Janata Party. Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi has even said that it is high time that the Union government to stop bullying people and take concrete steps to solve issues.

Speaking to media on Tuesday, Gandhi said that enough has been said on rising intolerance issues and be it educationist or intellectuals, all have voiced their opinion. He said that the opinions of the respective people in the country is not taken in a positive note and instead of addressing the intolerance issues, they are being bullied, which is absolutely unacceptable. He tweeted, “Instead of branding all those who question the Govt & Modiji- as unpatriotic, anti national or ‘motivated’…The Govt would do better to reach out to people to understand what’s disturbing them..That’s the way to solve problems in India- not by bullying, threatening & abusing!” (ALSO READ: Aamir Khan speaks out on rising intolerance under BJP govt, says wife Kiran wants to leave India)

The intolerance debate got a spark yesterday with Bollywood actor Aamir Khan expressed his fear and said that his wife Kiran Rao said to him to leave the country for the sake of their children. Speaking at the “Ramnath Goenka Excellence in Journalism Awards” in the capital on Monday, Khan said, “I feel, there’s sense of insecurity and fear,in last 6-8 months there has been growing sense of despondency. When I go home and talk to Kiran (Aamir’s wife), for the first time she says, ‘Should we move out of India?’ She (Kiran Rao) fears for her child and what the atmosphere around us will be. She feels scared to open newspaper everyday. This indicates there’s growing sense of disquiet and despondency in the country.”

Although, the issue has been much debated over a period of last two and half months — with more than 4o intellectuals returned their Sahitya Akademi Award, more than 5 return of Padma Shri and 36 National awards — the ruling government has been critisised for the branding the movement as ‘politically motivated’. On the particular issue Khan said, “For creative people,to voice what they feel is important, one of their way to express their dissatisfaction is to return awards. As long as you don’t resort to violence, all individuals have right to protest in whichever way they want.”

Knowing the fact that his comments would be criticised, he added, “As a citizen myself, I can’t deny but I have been alarmed by a number of incidence. For any society it is imp to have sense of security. It is imp for people who are elected representatives to take a strong stance and and make strong statements when there is sense of insecurity.” Aamir Khan is not the only one who stood against the intolerance, previously  his colleague Shahrukh Khan too raised his voice, but few saffron leaders adviced him to leave to Pakistan. With things unfolding step by step, it will interesting to see how the saffron leaders will comment on it.
