New Delhi: Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Saturday came under fire for questioning the Hindu quotient of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Gandhi, who has been facing criticism over his newly revealed ‘gotra’ and frequent temple visits to poll-bound states, claimed that PM Modi doesn’t understand the foundation of Hinduism.

“What is the essence of Hinduism? What does the Gita say? That knowledge is with everybody… Knowledge is all around you. Every living being has knowledge. Our prime minister says he is a Hindu, but he doesn’t understand (the) foundation of Hinduism. What kind of a Hindu is he?,” the Congress president said, while addressing the business community in Mewar district of poll bound Rajasthan.

Reacting sharply to Gandhi’s statement, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj said, “I wish the day won’t come when we have to learn meaning of being a Hindu from you (Rahul Gandhi). For years, the grand party presented him as secular leader but near polls when they realised that Hindus are in majority, they created this image.”

“The one who wears Brahminical thread) Hindu, but I did not know he is so rich in knowledge that now he will teach us the meaning of Hinduism. I wish the day won’t come when we have to learn meaning of being a Hindu from Rahul Gandhi (Bayan aaya ki wo ‘janeudhari brahmin’ hai,par mujhe nahi maloom tha ki ‘janeudhari brahmin’ ke gyan mein itni vridhi ho gayi ki Hindu hone ka matlab ab hame unse samajhna padega.Bhagwan na kare ki wo din kabhi aaye ki Rahul Gandhi se hame Hindu hone ka matlab janna pade), said Swaraj, while addressing a press conference in Jaipur.

BJP president Amit Shah also launched a blistering attack on Gandhi, saying, “The Congress is now preaching us about Hinduism… They are giving us lessons on Gita.”

Calling Congress chief a ‘confused Gandhi’, Union Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad, on the other hand, said that Rahul isn’t a Hindu by commitment, he is a Hindu by political consideration. “His Hindu faith changes with political expediency. He is the confused Gandhi & he keeps on changing his Hindu appearances for political purposes, not by way of commitment,” said Prasad. Meanwhile, in-charge of BJP’s national Information and Technology, Amit Malviya said, “Rahul Gandhi picks up from where CP Joshi left. Questions PM’s Hinduism implying he is someone from lower caste and unworthy of holding the high constitutional office or even commenting on Hinduism! It also establishes that all personal attacks on PM are sanctioned by Rahul.”

Notably, the latest attack on the Prime Minister comes days after Congress leader CP Joshi claimed that Narendra Modi and Uma Bharti are not qualified to speak on Hinduism. “Uma Bharti, who belongs to the Lodi samaj, is talking about Hindu religion. Narendra Modi too belongs to some other religion and talks about Hinduism,”Joshi had said, while  addressing a gathering at Sema village in Rajsamand district of poll-bound Rajasthan.
