New Delhi: A day after the prices of the LPG cylinders were hiked by Rs 144.50 per cylinder, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Thursday slammed the BJP for the price rise with tweeting a UPA-era picture of the saffron party’s leaders protesting an increase in prices of cooking gas at the time.

“I agree with these members of the BJP as they protest the astronomical 150 Rs price hike in LPG cylinders,” Rahul Gandhi said in a tweet. He also attached a picture of BJP leaders, including Smriti Irani, protesting the rise in cooking gas prices. He used the hashtag ‘RollBackHike’.

His remarks came a day after the Central government hiked the prices of the LPG cylinders by Rs 144.50 per cylinder taking the price to Rs 858.50 per cylinder.

The Congress leader’s tweet focused on the sharp political rivalry between him and Irani and is taken as a reminder that he has not forgotten the loss of his family bastion Amethi to the BJP leader.

Notably, Irani had defeated Rahul from Uttar Pradesh’s Amethi by a margin of 55,000 votes in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.

On Wednesday, it was one of the steepest increases in the LPG prices in over five years. As per the latest hike, a non-subsidised 14.2 kg cylinder will now cost Rs 858.50 in New Delhi, Rs 896 in Kolkata, Rs 829.50 in Mumbai and Rs 881 in Chennai.

Soon after the price was hiked, the women’s wing of the Congress had carried out a protest near Shastri Bhawan in the national capital over the matter.
