New Delhi, Mar 17: Congress President Rahul Gandhi intensified his attack on the Narendra Modi government on Sunday with a fresh ‘Gabbar Singh Tax’ jibe for the implementation of the Goods and Services Tax (GST). He took to Twitter and citing a report by the World Bank, mounted his offensive against the government’s economic policy. “Modi ji, the terror of Gabbar Singh Tax is now globally acclaimed. The World Bank says it’s the 2nd HIGHEST in the WORLD and one of the MOST complex,” he tweeted.

On the other hand, Union Minister Smriti Irani was quick to respond to the tweet by the Congress president. She accused him of ‘berating India’s progress’ by ‘selectively quoting’ the World Bank report. “Rahul Gandhi’s hatred for India is astonishing. When World Bank hailed India’s rise in Ease of Doing Business rankings, he rubbished the report. Now selectively quotes WB report to berate India’s progress!” she wrote in her tweet.

Earlier in the day, former Finance Minister P Chidambaram accused the Narendra Modi-led government of pushing people into poverty by implementing a flawed Goods and Services Tax (GST). Speaking on the last day of the Congress Plenary Session at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium, Chidambaram said, “It’s the biggest achievement of Manmohan Singh that 14  crore people were listed out of poverty. But the Narendra Modi-led BJP govt pushed people into poverty. The number of people below the poverty line went up. It’s the greatest disservice BJP govt did to the people of India.”

Meanwhile, hitting out at the Modi government over its failure at the economic front, former prime minister Manmohan Singh, addressing the Congress Plenary Session on Sunday, said that GST and demonetisation had destroyed jobs. “It is a challenge for the Congress to take lead once again and tackle problems of poverty, disease and unemployment,” he stated.
