Move to mobilise Congress members before Assembly elections

Saharanpur (UP), November 23: Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi on Monday started his ” Kisaan Padyatra” from Saharanpur in Uttar Pradesh. The move is expected to mobilise party members and get them ready for the upcoming Assembly elections scheduled in 2017. This is the first “Padyatra” by Lok Sabha MP from Amethi who has gained confidence after the success in recently conducted Bihar Assembly elections.

Though the “Padyatra” is not a new phenomenon for the youth leader as had done this during the previous Assembly elections too. Photographs and video coverage were seen where Gandhi was sleeping on the roof of a rural house in the night and some of the photos also showed that he ate in a Dalit house. But will that tactic work, as in the previous time the Congress lost in both the Assembly elections and was uprooted during the General elections in 2014. Secondly point that is in talk between the political arena about the speculations of Congress goings solo in the Assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh. Political analyst are of the opinion that this decision might have been taken with the confidence that the party gained after winning 27 seats in  Bihar Assembly elections. Issues such as intolerance, beef ban and reservation policies turned the wave towards the party.

The party — which fought the elections in coalition with Rashtriya Janata Dal supremo Lalu Prasad Yadav and Nitish Kumar’s Janata Dal United under the banner Mahagatbandhan — is of the opinion that the people’s faith is coming back on the Congress party and they would sweep the Assembly election if they contest the election single-handedly. However, with the present environment when things are going out of hands from the ruling Bhartiya Janata Party and the Prime Minister Narendra Modi, it would be interesting to see how things will shape in the upcoming times.
