New Delhi, Aug 6: Days after Congress President Rahul Gandhi hugged PM Modi during no-confidence motion debate in Lok Sabha, Janata Dal (Secular) leader Adaguru H. Vishwanath on Monday called it a childish act. Vishwanath on Sunday was appointed as the Karnataka president of the party.
Earlier in the day, All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) leader Asaduddin Owaisi also said, “No-Confidence Motion was moved against Modi and they hug the same person against whom they moved the motion. If I had gone and shook hands with Modi, fatwa would have got issued against me. But when he (Rahul Gandhi) hugged Modi, Congressmen didn’t utter a word.”

Notably, Rahul Gandhi on July 20 took everyone by surprise when he walked up to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and gave him a warm hug after finishing his speech during the no-confidence motion debate in Parliament. While some cheered and some made fun of this act, Rahul Gandhi explained his gesture saying that people may call him what they will but he doesn’t have any hatred in his heart.
Gandhi was severely criticised by the BJP leaders for hugging Modi during his speech. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had described Gandhi as an “incapable leader” to hold any public office, while the Congress said that Gandhi’s hug was full of grace and Modi’s attack on him exposes “politics of hate”.
Vishwanath, who quit the Congress recently, joined the JD(S) on Tuesday at a function organised at JP Bhavan (party office).
Vishwanath, who was associated with the Congress for nearly four decades, decided to quit the party accusing Chief Minister Siddaramaiah of ignoring senior party leaders and workers, who were “responsible for the growth of the party.”
