Panaji (Goa), Mar 20: Goa Congress President Shantaram Naik on Tuesday resigned after taking ‘inspiration’ from party President Rahul Gandhi‘s speech at Plenary Session. At the Congress Plenary Session on March 17, Rahul Gandhi had called for the old guard in the party to make way for the young generation to lead. “Inspired by Congress president Rahul Gandhi’s speech at the plenary session where he said that the younger generation should come forward to take leadership, I have resigned from the post of Goa Congress president,” Shantaram Naik was quoted as saying by news agency ANI. At the Congress Plenary Session, Rahul Gandhi had vowed to break the wall between senior leaders and workers with the help of “talented youngsters” and in the process, making a new Congress. “…bring down the wall, not by anger but with love, and by showing respect to veterans,” he had said. “Rahul Gandhi showed the empty stage and wished to fill that stage with younger generation. That inspired me,” he added saying that he will write to the party President on Wednesday, March 21.
Earlier in the day, there were speculations that the party’s Gujarat chief Bharatsinh Solanki would also resign.
Naik was appointed as Congress chief for Goa on July 7, last year. He had replaced Luizinho Faleiro who resigned in June apparently due to factionalism in the state unit.
