Mumbai, Apr 30: Trying to gain popularity among the voters after the party’s poor performance in the recently conducted Maharashtra civic elections, Raj Thackeray-led Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) is now seen battling for the non-vegetarians residents in Mumbai. The party has alleged that many builders across the city have refused to sell the flats to buyers on the basis of their religion and dietary preferences.
Reports suggest that the party has sent letters to more than 10 major real estate builders warning them not to discriminate the buyers on the basis of their food habits. The letter further warns that the builders would face “consequences” if they refuse to sell flats to non-vegetarian buyers. Sandip Deshpande, MNS functionary from Mahim sent letters to builders stating that flats are being refused to non-vegetarian buyers.
“We have come across complaints that you refused to sell flats to certain buyers by discriminating against them on basis of caste, religion and dietary preferences (whether the buyer is vegetarian or non-vegetarian),” the letter sent by Deshpande read. Labelled as “request letters”, Deshpande has been quoted stating that the party will teach the builders a lesson if they don’t follow the party’s request.
On being questioned about the party’s authority in issuing letters to builders, MNS youth wing vice president Akhil Chitre said that the party took the matter into its own hands after the government failed to intervene in the matter despite the issue being consistently raised by the MNS corporators.
Reports suggest that some builders, threatened by MNS’ warning, responded back to MNS office bearers assuring that they have never discriminated any buyer on the basis of their diet preferences.
MNS has been constantly raising up the issue of discrimination against non-vegetarians and ahead of the BMC elections, the party also had set up a non-vegetarian food stall outside a Jain-dominated society in Vile Parle. The party has been protesting against the ban of meat sale in Maharashtra during the Paryushan festival.
