New Delhi, Feb 1: After an overwhelming victory in Rajasthan by-polls, Congress President Rahul Gandhi on Thursday congratulated the state unit for impressive performance. Congress swept the by-polls by winning Ajmer and Alwar Lok Sabha constituencies. Taking to Twitter, Gandhi said the people of Rajasthan have rejected the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the by-polls. The latest by-poll results come as a shock to the saffron party ahead of crucial assembly elections in the end of the year. The party had swept the previous bypolls followed by a clean sweep in general elections in 2014. While it won 163 out of 200 assembly seats, it swept the general elections by clinching all 25 Lok Sabha seats in 2014. The Congress also won the Mangalgarh constituency of Rajasthan assembly. Congress candidate Vivek Dhakad won the seat with a margin of 12976 votes. Earlier, Ajmer and Alwar Lok Sabha constituencies on Monday recorded an impressive turnout of 65.2 and 61.86 per cent respectively. The by-polls on the constituencies were necessitated after the death of sitting Members of parliament. Ajmer MP Sanwar Lal Jat, Alwar MP Chand Nath and Mandalgarh MLA Kirti Kumari passed away last year.

After the overwhelming lead in the state polls, Rajasthan Pradesh Congress Committee chief Sachin Pilot said that it is the victory of the people of the state and asked Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje to step down from her post.

“It is the Chief Minister’s moral responsibility to resign from her post. The Congress party has performed quite well in the Rajasthan by-polls and after this overwhelming mandate it is our responsibility to perform better”, he said
