New Delhi: Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Monday asserted that states have been asked to identify Rohingyas and collect their biometric details. While addressing a press conference, Singh said,”Once biometric details will be submitted, the government will initiate action. The Centre will send the biometric report collected by states to the Myanmar government through diplomatic channel,” the home minister informed.
Singh’s statement comes after he chaired a meeting of the Eastern Zonal Council in Kolkata to discuss issues related to inter-state relations and security matters, including the Maoist menace. The Union Home Minister said that the states required central forces which the Centre would provide as per need.
The meeting was attended by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Jharkhand Chief Minister Raghubar Das and Bihar D weputy Chief Minister Sushil Kumar Modi. Odisha was represented in the meeting by Finance Minister Shashi Bhusan Behera.
As per a report, nearly 14,000 Rohingyas living in the country are registered with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, while about 40,000 are said to be staying illegally. Earlier in July, Rajnath Singh had said in Parliament some Rohingya Muslim migrants in India have been found indulging in illegal activities and maintained that security forces have been deployed to stop their infiltration into the country.
