New Delhi, July 20: Celebrations underway, wishes pour in for Ram Nath Kovind who is set to take oath as the 14th President of India. The Race to Raisina Hill was a cake walk for the former Bihar Governor and he defeated the Opposition candidate Meira Kumar by 3,34,730 votes. While Kovind secured 7,02,044 votes, former Lok Sabha speaker Meira secured 3,67,314 votes for the electoral college. Prime Minister Narendra Modi was one of the first ones to congratulate Kovind on his win. “Congratulations to Shri Ram Nath Kovind Ji on being elected the President of India! Best wishes for a fruitful and inspiring tenure. Gladdened by the extensive support for Shri Ram Nath Kovind Ji among MPs and across various states. Kovind is the first Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh-Bharatiya Janata member, first one from Uttar Pradesh and second Dalit leader to take the top post. So far, nine prime ministers are from the politically important state Uttar Pradesh.

BJP chief Amit Shah thanked leaders across the party line for supporting Kovind. “The election of Shri Ram Nath Kovind ji is a victory for the poor, downtrodden and marginalised and their aspirations. I thank BJP members, NDA family, other valued parties and leaders who supported Shri Ram Nath Kovind ji.”

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee was the first one to congratulate Kovind. “Congratulations to Ram Nath Kovind Ji, who will be our next President.”
