New Delhi, Feb 27: Kargil martyr Captain Mandeep Singh’s daughter Gurmehar Kaur, who is in the line of fire over her campaign against the ABVP, has said that she won’t be cowed down and is ready to take a bullet for the country just like her father. Speaking to ANI on Monday, Kaur said, “I will not be scared or be cowed down. My father took a bullet for the country and I am also ready to take a bullet for the country.”
Speaking on the violence that erupted at the Ramjas College last week, Kaur said, “Stones were not pelted on Umar Khalid, he was not even present there. Stones were pelted on students who were there. Whether it is ABVP or any other students’ body, no one has the right to take law and order into their own hands.”
Kaur, who was termed ‘anti-national’ and was compared tp Dawood Ibrahim by BJP MP Pratap Simha on Monday, said she loves her country and also her fellow students. “I love my country and I also love my fellow students and I support their right to freedom of speech,” she said.
BJP MP Pratap Simha on Monday compared Kaur to Dawood Ibrahim, saying, “At least Dawood did not use the crutches of his father’s name to justify his anti-national stand.”
Kaur, a student of the Lady Sri Ram College of the Delhi University, began a campaign against the ABVP on the social media after violence at Ramjas College. Kaur posted her image with a placard reading, “I am a student from Delhi University. I am not afraid of ABVP. I am not alone. Every student of India is with me. #StudentsAgainstABVP”. She posted another image with a placard, “Pakistan did not kill my father, war did.”
A row erupted over Kaur’s message on the social media soon afer. Cricketer Virender Sehwag took to Twitter and posted a picture of himself with a placard reading, “I didn’t score two triple centuries, my bat did.” Sehwag’s tweet was backed by actor Randeep Hooda. Following their tweets against Kaur, many on Twitter flayed the two celebrities while many also tweeted in favour of the two.
Noted journalist Shekhar Gupta expressed disappointment over the tweets by Sehwag and Hooda and tweeted, “Sad, from you, Viru & Randeep, big-hearted stars. Nobody’s patriotism needs certificates & hers has stamp of her father’s supreme sacrifice.” Journalist Barkha Dutt also hit out at Hooda for his tweets against Kaur.
Kaur has also claimed that she has been receiving rape threats on social media since she spoke against the ABVP on Facebook. “I’ve been getting a lot of threats on social media. When you open the profile picture that I changed, you keep seeing there are people threatening me and calling me an anti-nationalist. I think it’s very scary when people threaten you with violence or with rape. There is this guy called Rahul and he’s given a very detailed explanation in a comment saying how he would like to rape me. That is very scary,” said Gurmehar Kaur while speaking to NDTV.
