Guwahati, March 29: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP RP Sharma from Assam’s Tezpur on Thursday said that rapists should be hanged and shot dead in public. Speaking in reference to the rape and murder of a class 5 student in Assam’s Nagaon district last week, Sharma said those committing a crime as brutal as rape, must be shot in public as it is the only way to stop such incidents.

He further added that people who don’t respect women must be awarded the capital punishment. Sharma also said that a minimum of 10 years in prison must be given to criminals who assault, molest or touch a woman inappropriately.

An advocate by profession, Sharma said stringent laws should be in place. He further stated that minors committing this heinous crime must not get away with fewer punishments. The statement proposing stricter laws for minors come in the wake of the Nagaon incident, in which a child, who was in her home alone, was raped and set on fire by three people’ two of whom were minors.
