Yoon added that Kim Jong-un said to South Korean President Moon Jae-in that he was reasonable as opposed to what is perceived as his public image and would not go shooting nuclear weapons at the United States or any other country for that matter. He said that Kim believed Americans despised him but they would understand once they have a talk him. Yoon also noted that Kim was sincere in making his statements and hence signed a joint declaration recognising a nuclear-free Korean Peninsula. Despite making claims of doing away with nuclear weapons, Kim never renounced the use of nuclear arms publicly. Reacting to Kim Jong-un’s claims, US President Trump’s new national security adviser John R Bolton said that Trump had full confidence with this deal presented by North Korea and was looking forward to dismantling North’s nuclear programme for not less than a period of two years. He added that if all goes well, it would be a historic moment and an achievement on Trump’s part. On the other hand, Bolton also reserved his prejudices regarding the deal saying that North Korea had made such statements in the past as well and it would be interesting to see if it made any real commitments.
Further speaking on North Korea insisting on a promise by the United States, Bolton said that the US wasn’t interested in seeing North Korea’s propaganda and that the North Korea had been demanding this since a long time.
