New Delhi: Responding to PM Modi’s call to fight the corornavirus pandemic together, millions of Indians across the country on Sunday night switched off lights at their homes and lit up candles and diyas or turned on mobile phone torches to show the collective resolve to fight the COVID-19 with this symbolic gesture. Ahead of 9 PM, many people were seen turning off lights at their homes while lighting up lamps and candles in their balconies and at entrance doors. Along with lighting up the lamps, people were seen singing devotional songs, mantras and national anthem, in scenes similar to the ones seen across the country on March 22 when PM Modi had asked all to come out briefly at 5 PM to show gratitude to health and other essential service providers. Many prominent leaders of the country also took part in this noble event. President Ram Nath Kovind along with wife Savita, Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu and his wife Ushamma, several Union ministers including Amit Shah and Rajnath Singh along with BJP leader LK Advani and Bollywood celebrities lighted up diyas at 9 PM.

After urging the nation, PM Modi, himself, lit up a lamp at his residence for nine minutes at 9 PM to display the country’s collective resolve and solidarity to defeat the virus.

As per latest updates, the nine-minute lights-out event on Sunday evening went off well without any disruption in the electricity grid after the government and utilities put in place elaborate plans to deal with the sudden drop and then a quick spurt in demand.

In Tamil Nadu, Superstar Rajinikanth was among the celebrities who joined the symbolic event against coronavirus and held a candle in his Poes Garden residence.

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, NCP chief Sharad Pawar were among the prominent leaders who lit up the lamps.

On the other hand, renowned singer Lata Mangeshkar, mega star Amitabh Bachchan and other actors and celebrities too responded to the PM’s call in Maharashtra.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s nonagenarian mother Heeraben Modi on Sunday night lit up an earthen lamp after turning off all lights at her residence.  She also joined everyone in the collective fight against the deadly coronavirus that has claimed over 77 lives in the country country.

The development comes at a time when the death toll in the country due to the novel coronavirus pandemic rose to 83 and the cases climbed to 3,577 on Sunday after 505 new infections were reported in the past 24 hours.
