Rewari: The two prime accused in Rewari gangrape case – Pankaj and Manish – have been arrested by the police. The arrests come a week after another main accused Nishu was apprehended, along with two others — Sanjeev, the doctor who first attended to the woman following the crime, and Deendayal, on whose property she was allegedly raped.
DGP B S Sandhu said with the arrest of Manish and the Army man, Pankaj, all the key accused allegedly involved in the incident, have now been arrested. “Both the prime accused in the case, who had been on the run, have been arrested,” DGP Sandhu told PTI.
The 19-year-old victim, a school topper who was felicitated by the government, was abducted by three men from a bus stop in Kanina town of neighbouring Mahendragarh district on September 12 while she was on her way to a coaching class.
The accused, who arrived in a car, allegedly drugged her and raped her at a room housing a tubewell for irrigation.
One of the main accused has been identified as Pankaj, an Army man posted in Rajasthan. Police arrested Nishu on September 16.
Meanwhile, a court in Mahendergarh district on Friday extended Nishu’s remand by four days while Sanjeev and Deendayal were sent to judicial custody.
The gangrape had prompted opposition parties to demand Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar’s resignation on moral grounds, alleging the state had failed to protect its daughters.
The Congress had demanded imposition of President’s Rule in the state, alleging the BJP-led government had utterly failed to tackle the law and order situation.
