New Delhi: Aam Aadmi Party’s Haryana chief Naveen Jaihind on Tuesday, justified how the victim’s family returned the state government’s compensation of Rs 2 lakh by saying a price couldn’t be put on a woman’s izzat. And to do so, he used a controversial analogy. He said, “The state government has offered Rs 2 lakh to the victim’s family but can you put a price on a woman’s izzat? If Rs 2 lakh is the price for that, how about any BJP leader getting raped by 10 people and we pay him Rs 20 lakh as compensation?” (Also read: Silence on Rewari Gangrape Unacceptable, Rahul Tells PM Modi)

“Aur sabse jo dukh bhari baat hai… ki uss parivar ko 2 Lakh Rs ka check diya jata hai… parivar keh raha hai ki aap giraftaar kariye doshiyon k0 hame nyay chahiye, hume 2 Lakh rs nahi chahiye to ye to namak chidakne wali baat hogyi na,” he added. “This incident is very unfortunate, I met the victim and her family, they are demanding justice,” said Jaihind who is the husband of Delhi Commission for Women chief Swati Maliwal.

While there was an uproar over the comment, AAP party leader Atishi went on to explain Jaihind’s stand and said later in the day, “What he highlighted is valid, but yes, the way he worded it is wrong.” In the gangrape, a 19-year-old girl, also a CBSE topper, was abducted last Wednesday while she was on her way to her coaching class. She was allegedly drugged and gang-raped then. Three arrests have been made in the case, including that of a main accused while two others are still on the run.
