New Delhi: Days after Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath, renamed Allahabad as ‘Prayagraj’ and Faizabad as ‘Sri Ayodhya’, BJP leader Sangeet Som on Friday want Muzaffarnagar to be renamed Laxminagar. Som, a key accused in Muzaffarnagar riots case has claimed that the city was already known as Laxminagar but Mughals changed it.
Earlier right-wing group Bajrang Dal had hold multiple meetings in rural areas to generate public awareness regarding the same. “The region was called Laxminagar some 2000 years ago. We have been making efforts for the name change for many years,”Bajrang Dal’s district Ankur Rana told a leading portal.
Notably, the changing of names of places put after renowned Muslim figures is seen a Hindutva push by the ruling BJP ahead Assembly and 2019 Lok Sabha elections.
A few days ago, CM Yogi had renamed Faizabad as Sri Ayodhya and Allahabad as Prayagraj. On November 6, before renaming Faizabad, CM Yogi had also renamed the Ekank Statium in Lucknow to Atal Bihari Vajpayee stadium after the late Prime Minister of India.
Following this, BJP’s disgruntled ally Shiv Sena mount pressure on the Centre to carry out a name-change spree in Maharashtra as well. Sena spokesperson Sanjay Raut asked Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to rename Aurangabad to Sambhaji Nagar and Osmanabad to Dharashiv Nagar.
“Yogi Adityanath has renamed Allahabad and Faizabad to Pragyaraj and Ayodhya. When will CM Devendra Fadnavis rename Aurangabad to Sambhaji Nagar and Osmanabad to Dharashiv Nagar?” asked Raut in a tweet in Hindi.
Meanwhile, demands to change the name of Gujarat’s Ahmedabad to Karnavati and Madhya Pradesh’s Bhopal to Bhojpal have also gained pace.
“We are contemplating changing the name of Ahmedabad to Karnavati, the talks of which have been going on since a long time. Concrete steps will be taken after looking at it from legal and all other angles. We will think about it in the time to come,” said Gujarat CM Vijay Rupani.
