Jadavpur, May 6: Riots broke out in Jadavpur University as members of left-aligned student union clashed with volunteers of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) over the screening of Buddha at a traffic jam. Several ABVP workers were rushed to hospital amid the clashes. High alert has been issued by local police.
The controversy triggered off today when the director Vivek Agnihotri reached Jadavpur University to screen his movie. However, the students of All India Students’ Association (AISA), Students’ Federation of India (SFI) and Democratic Students Union (DSU) staged a massive protest and gheraoed the filmmaker. Not only was his screening cancelled by the student union, but Agnihotri was demanded to leave the campus at earliest. Hours later, ABVP workers, mostly outsiders who are not enrolled in the University entered the campus and attempted to screen the movie for their supporters. This prompted the leftist student union to confront the saffron group. Soon after clashed broke out with both sides pelting stones at each other.
Buddha in a Traffic Jam is scheduled to be released on May 13. The movie has already created a buzz within the socio-political circles. As per the teasers, the film attacks the ideology of socialism in scathing manner, and accuses leftist intellectuals of propagating naxalism in overt or covert manner. Bollywood actor Anupam Kher, known for his right-wing leanings is seen as the protagonist in the movie.
