Chennai, Nov 24: The Election Commission on Friday announced that the RK Nagar Assembly bye-election will take place in December. While voting for the RK Nagar bypoll will take place on December 21, the counting date has been decided as December 24. The RK Nagar seat has been in the news ever since it fell vacant after the death of former Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalalithaa.
The election was cancelled after allegations of ‘cash for votes’ and ‘two leaves’ symbol bribery cases. The announcement of the dates comes a day after the poll panel gave back the AIADMK two leaves symbol to the E Palaniswamy and O Panneerselvam faction, in what was seen as a major setback for VK Sasikala and TTV Dinakaran.
While the AIADMK is yet to declare a candidate to contest the RK Nagar bypoll, sidelined party leader TTV Dinakaran has announced that he will be contesting it.
