New Delhi, Dec 24: The counting of votes for RK Nagar, Pakke-Kasang, 28-Likabali, Sikandra, Sabang Assembly Bye-elections will begin at 8 AM today, Sunday. The results are expected to be out by afternoon. Voting for the high stakes bypoll in RK Nagar Assembly constituency, which fell vacant after the death of late AIADMK supremo J Jayalalithaa, was held on Thursday amid tight security. Apart from RK Nagar, four other constituencies also went to polls on Thursday. While one constituency is in Uttar Pradesh, two are in Arunachal Pradesh and one in West Bengal. RK Nagar recorded a 77.68 per cent voter turnout. Key contenders for this seat are AIADMK’s E Madhusudhanan, the main Opposition DMK’s N Maruthu Ganesh and sidelined AIADMK leader TTV Dhinakaran.

In Arunachal, Pakke-Kasang (ST) and 28-Likabali (ST) Assembly constituencies went for re-elections. EVMs and Voter-Verified Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) system were used for the first time in the state. Pakke-Kessang recorded 86 per cent polling, while Likabali constituency recorded 51 per cent. Notably, 28-Likabali (ST) constituency seat fell vacant following the death of Health and Family Welfare Minister, Jomde Kena on September 4 last year.
In Uttar Pradesh, Sikandra assembly constituency in Kanpur Dehat district went to poll on December 21. Nearly 53 per cent of the total 3.21 lakh electorate cast their votes in the Assembly by-election in Sikandara. The re-election was necessitated following the death of sitting MLA Mathura Prasad Pal. In all, there are 12 candidates in the fray. Out of this, there are five independent candidates. The BJP has fielded Ajit Pal Singh from the constituency, while the Samajwadi Party has given ticket to Seema Sachan. The Congress has fielded Prabhakar from the constituency.
West Bengal’s Sabang constituency also went to polls on Thursday. In the first two hours of voting, the constituency recorded a turnout of just 15 per cent.
