New Delhi, June 20: Caught in a controversy for saying she was promised money to attend anti-government rallies, Rohith Vemula’s mother Radhika Vemula on Wednesday explained what she meant. She said, “I have no problem with Indian Union Muslim League (IUML). There was a clerical error regarding one cheque, they said it will be rectified. BJP’s allegation that IUML is trying to convert my son Raju to Islam is false.” (Also read: Will Campaign For Anyone Who is Against BJP)

Highlights

  • Says some clerical error in IUML cheque.
  • Rubbishes all of BJP's allegations.

Earlier,  Union Minister Piyush Goyal had reacted sharply to the reports that Radhika had accused the Kerala-based IUML of not giving her the promised Rs 20 lakh to attend political rallies ‘where false allegations against the BJP were levelled’. “How long will the Opposition parties continue with such abhorrent tactics for petty political gains? The condition of the family (Vemula) was not good and she was promised money for political reasons so that she could share the stage with Opposition leaders and level allegations,” he told the press on Wednesday.

He said Rahul Gandhi had also shared the stage with Radhika and said it needed to be found what other allurements had been offered to Radhika. “The Congress president should apologise,” he said, claiming that opposition parties have been unmasked for their politics based on lies.

The BJP condemns this low level of politics and political misuse of such an incident, Goyal said referring to the suicide. “People will not forget these parties,” he said. Radhika has said, “It’s true that the IUML promised me money, but they haven’t used me for political gains. It was my wish to speak against PM Modi. If needed, I will speak again in any of their meeting.”
