A shocking move by Narendra Modi government has led to Rs 32 and in some cases a Rs 47 compensation to farmers who are affected by the September 2014 flood that devastated Jammu and Kashmir in 2014. The highest compensation that a farmer got was Rs 113. This is an absolutely shameful mockery of the farmers that have been part of the Make In India campaign long before it was ever conceptualized. Clearly, the farmers chose to return the cheques claiming that the PDP-BJP coalition government in the state has only managed to aggravate the poor and the deprived farmers rather than helping them in their time of need. The cheques issued by the State Agricultural department were given as a result of a survey conducted by revenue and agricultural officers to assess the damage caused due to the floods in 2014.
Various farmers who received various sums of money within the Rs 32 to Rs 113 range stated that the cheques were all signed by the Sub-Divisional Agriculture Officer in Marh Talab Tillo based in Jammu. The protesting farmers are against the decision and assessment of the government claiming that crop worth thousands has been destroyed due to hailstorms and floods as they expect the government to remunerate them for their losses. Sarpanch Vijay Kumar Sharma said that the low value cheques was a cruel joke being played by the government that doesn’t want to pay up when the farmers need it the most. The government officials maintain that the compensation is in tune with the Central CDRF norms. A review of the compensation is under process after protests from the farmers on what is clearly unfair and extremely undervalued reimbursement for losses due to natural calamities.
