New Delhi, May 22: Even as crimes against women continue unabated, politicians continue to air their regressive views over the issue, attributing the spike in crime to a woman’s attire or her character. The latest to jump onto the moral police bandwagon is Samajwadi Party MLA Ramashankar Vidyarthi. Speaking to ANI, he said, “Mahila aur purush ki banaavat aise di hai ki ussi hisaab se unko kapde pehene chahiyein jisse ashleelta na dikhe. Rape tab tak nahi rukenge jab tak ashleelta pe pratibandh nahi lagega (Men and women are built differently so they should dress up accordingly. They should dress in such a way as to not appear obscene. Rapes would continue till obscenity isn’t put a check on).” Also Read - Inspiring! What, one would ask, can help check obscenity, besides dressing conservatively, one might ask. To that, Vidyarthi has a simple solution, “Iske liye nabaaligon ke haathon se mobile pe pratibandh lagana padega (We would need to check the usage of mobile phones by minors).” With his outrageous remarks, Vidyarthi has joined the group that places the blame for sexual crimes on victims. Last year, BJP MP Kirron Kher had also faced flak for blaming the Chandigarh gang rape victim by saying she shouldn’t have boarded an auto that already had three men in it. Tainted godman Asaram Bapu had also said that Nirbhaya should have pleaded with the men raping her by calling them ‘Bhaiya’. Earlier, SP patriarch Mulayam Singh Yadav had said: “Boys will be boys” when asked to comment on rape.
