Lucknow, Mar 16: Samajwadi Party is likely to elect a new legislature party leader after the party’s poor show in Uttar Pradesh Assembly Elections 2017. Newly elected MLAs of the Samajwadi Party are likely to meet at the party office in Lucknow today to discuss the future course of action, as per the reports. SP supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav has not been invited to the meeting which has given indications that the war between the Akhilesh Yadav-led faction and Mulayam Singh-led faction hasn’t been resolved yet despite their efforts to make a truce between the warring factions. The reports also have it that Shivpal Yadav is also likely to skip the meeting.
“SP national president Akhilesh Yadav would be meeting the newly elected SP legislators at the party office on March 16. Discussions on who could possibly be the new leader of the SP legislative party may take place. Apart from this deliberation on the future role of the party on the floor of House may also happen,” SP spokesperson Rajendra Chaudhary told reporters.
Chaudhary also said that said that as far as deliberations on the possible causes of defeat in Uttar Pradesh assembly polls is concerned, Akhilesh Yadav may convene another meeting next week with the party candidates who lost the assembly elections in UP.
Riding on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s growing popularity, the BJP won whopping 312 seats in the 403-member Uttar Pradesh assembly, while the Samajwadi Party came down to 47 seats from 224 in the 2012 elections. The Congress party managed to bag a total of only seven seats.
Before the assembly elections, Akhilesh Yadav toppled his father Mulayam Singh Yadav as the President of the party after SP supremo expelled Akhilesh Yadav and Ram Gopal Yadav from the party for 6 years. Akhilesh Yadav’s faction also removed Shivpal Singh Yadav from the post of state president, naming Naresh Uttar as the state chief.
