Schools, Colleges in Kerala to Remain Closed Tomorrow Due to Heavy Rains

Six flood rescue teams were deployed by the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) in Ernakulam, Alappuzha, Wayanad, Kozhikode and Palakkad to carry out Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) work.

Thiruvananthapuram, Aug 9: All the educational institutions in Idukki, Kollam, Kothamangalam, Kunnathunad, Aluva, Paravur Taluk, and Kadamakkudy and other districts in Kerala would remain closed on Friday owing to the heavy rainfall. Kerala has witnessed unprecedented floods since Wednesday and the rainfall has been incessant in the state for two weeks.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said in a tweet that he spoke to Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan regarding the flood situation in the southern state. He also stated that help was offered to those affected by the heavy rainfall.

According to Union Minister Alphons Kannanthanam, the state has experienced the heaviest rainfall in 50 years. At least 22 people have lost their lives due to rain-related incidents in the state, officials said on Thursday. While 10 people in Idukki, five in Malappuram, two in Kannur and one in Wayanad district died due to a landslide, three people in Wayanad, Palakkad, and Kozhikode district respectively were found missing, sources from the disaster control room informed.

Six flood rescue teams were deployed by the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) in Ernakulam, Alappuzha, Wayanad, Kozhikode and Palakkad to carry out Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) work. Armed forces were ordered to fly to Kerala immediately, while six central rescue teams were already there. An Inter-Ministerial Central Team of the Central government will also be visiting the areas affected by floods in the rain-battered state.

The heavy rainfall was responsible for the copious inflow into the state’s reservoirs. Water levels rise in various dams reached their maximum capacity. Therefore the shutters of 22 dams including Idamalayar was opened on Thursday. In fact the shutters of the Cheruthoni dam was opened after a long period of 26 years.
