New Delhi: Self-styled godman Ashu Bhai was sent to three days of judicial custody for allegedly gangraping a woman and her 16-year-old daughter at his ashram in New Delhi’s Hauz Khas area. The police said that that there was sufficient evidence against the self-styled baba who raped the mother-daughter duo at his ashram.
The baba has allegedly fled to Ghaziabad after an FIR was lodged against him and his son Samar under Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses (POCSO) Act. Soon after, the police traced both the baba and his son to Ajnara Apartments and then handed them over to the Crime Branch of Delhi police.
The woman was produced before a court in south Delhi on September 11 to record her statement. She said Ashu Bhai’s ashram was set up in the basement of a building. Ashu Bhai sold incense sticks, candles and Shani yantras there along with his manager Ravi Shankar. The woman claimed that many women were also called to this ashram. Police teams would be visiting the baba’s ashram to verify her claims.
Reportedly, Ashu Bhai’s followers told police that he had changed his name from Asif Khan to Ashu Bhai and started practising astrology. He would charge a huge amount for performing rituals. For the unversed, in the early 1990s, Ashu used to stay in a JJ colony in Wazirpur and run a cycle-repair shop there. Later, he shifted to a market in Sarai Rohilla in north Delhi to practise astrology and started gaining followers.
A few years later, Ashu shut his shop after earning a fortune. He was soon contacted by some television channels who promoted him as a specialist in removing bad luck. The conniving baba would tell stories of helping a truck driver and a rickshaw-puller whom he had helped become a millionaire. These videos helped him garner more followers from UP and Haryana.
