A car owner in in Rajasthan’s Bharatpur has filed a fraud complaint against Bollywood actors Shah Rukh Khan, Deepika Padukone, and six officials from a Hyundai car dealership. The complaint claims that he was sold a defective car. According to 50-year-old Kirti Singh, a resident of Anirudh Nagar in the Mathura Gate police station area, he bought a Hyundai Alcazar on June 14, 2022 from Malwa Auto Sales Pvt. Ltd. in Sonipat, Haryana. Soon after buying it, the car started showing technical problems.
Singh said he repeatedly requested the dealership to replace the car or refund the amount of Rs. 23,97,553, but they refused. After getting no response despite several follow-ups, he approached the court to file a complaint.
Based on the court’s order, the complaint was registered on August 25 at the Mathura Gate police station. The case has been filed under sections 312, 318, 316, and 61 of the BNS, along with sections 420, 406, and 120B of the IPC.
In his petition before the Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate, Bharatpur, Kirti Singh named Hyundai Motor India’s top executives – Managing Director Anso Kim (registered office Kancheepuram, Tamil Nadu), COO Tarun Garg (corporate office Gurugram, Haryana), Malwa Auto Sales Pvt. Ltd. MD Nitin Sharma and Director Priyanka Sharma (Sonipat, Haryana). He also listed actors Deepika Padukone (residing at Beaumonde Towers, Prabhadevi, Mumbai) and Shah Rukh Khan (residing at Mannat, Bandra West, Mumbai) as accused for endorsing and promoting the brand.
According to Kirti Singh, he bought a Hyundai Alcazar 1.5 AT Signature Black from Sonipat on June 14, 2022, for Rs. 23,97,353. Before the purchase, a company representative even visited his home, discussed the deal, and collected Rs. 51,000 as advance payment. Singh then arranged a loan of Rs. 10,03,699 through HDB Financial Services in Bharatpur and paid the remaining amount in cash.
Singh claimed the dealership assured him the car would be completely trouble-free and promised to take responsibility if any issue arose. However, soon after the purchase, the car began to show serious technical problems. According to him, whenever he tried to accelerate or overtake, the car’s RPM shot up, the vehicle vibrated, but the speed didn’t increase. The screen also displayed a warning: “Engine Management System Malfunction.”
“This defect has repeatedly put my and my family’s lives at risk,” Singh said in his petition. He added that when he reported the issue, company representatives admitted it was a manufacturing defect that couldn’t be fixed and bizarrely advised him to park the car and keep it running at 2000 RPM for an hour whenever the error appeared.
Singh accused Hyundai officials of hiding known issues in the Alcazar model and cheating customers. He said their refusal to replace the car or refund the amount with interest was a clear case of fraud and breach of trust. He also blamed Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone, arguing that their endorsements of the car misled customers into believing the product was reliable.
