New Delhi: The Patiala High Court Monday framed charges against Army Major Nikhil Handa under Sections 302 and (murder) and 201 (destruction of evidence) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) in the Shailaja Dwivedi murder case. According to ANI, the court will begin prosecution evidence on January 19.

The Delhi Police filed its chargesheet against the Army Major stating that a night before the murder of Shailaja, Handa had watched several videos on Youtube ‘on how to kill someone’. It further states that it indicated that Handa had the intention of murdering Shailaja. As per Delhi Police, it was a pre-planned murder.

Apparently, investigative reports suggested that the accused Major was “obsessed” with the woman and wanted to marry her.

“He knew her since 2015… He was obsessed with her… He wanted to marry her, “Deputy Commissioner of Police Vijay Kumar had said in a media briefing in the month of June this year. “To make it look like an accident, Handa then ran over his car on Shailaja. Handa had an obsession with Shailja and was pressurising her to marry him,” Kumar said.

Handa revealed during interrogation that he knew Shailaja since 2015 and in 2017, he and the victim’s husband were posted together in Dimapur in Nagaland. “While Amit was there with his family, Handa lived alone,” he said.

As Shailaja came to Delhi in the month of April and started residing in Army quarters in Naraina near the Cantonment with her husband who was assigned to leave for a deputation to Sudan for a United Nation’s mission in a couple of weeks, Handa also came here on June 2.

When Handa came to know that Shailaja was undergoing physiotherapy at the Base Hospital in the Cantonment area, he also started taking migraine treatment in the same hospital to maintain proximity with the victim, said the official, adding he also got his child admitted to that hospital.
