Ahmedabad, Dec 12: Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) President Sharad Pawar on Tuesday launched a scathing attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi for citing Pakistan’s alleged meddling in Gujarat Assembly elections. Addressing a rally in Ahmedabad, former defence minister Pawar said that the PM has been using Pakistan angle as a diversionary tactic for Gujarat elections.
“Shame on you, Prime Minister for making such allegations. You have made the allegations against this country’s former PM and former Defence officials. A prime minister is supposed to take action and not to level allegations,” Pawar said.
Alleging that the Centre has failed to address issues of farmers, Pawar stated,”Modi-led government has not solved issues of farmers and other issues the country faces, but he is bringing the Pakistan angle as a diversionary tactic for Gujarat elections.
PM Modi had cited a meeting of Congress leaders at the residence of Mani Shankar Aiyar with Pakistan Army’s former Director General and alleged the neighbouring country was trying to interfere in elections. Miffed by PM Modi’s remark, Manmohan Singh had sought an apology .
Apart from this, PM Modi was also criticised by key ally Shiv Sena. In an article published in party mouthpiece ‘Saamna’, the party emphasised that a prime minister is supposed to take action and not level allegations.
“Prime Minister Modi has levelled a serious charge that Pakistan is interfering in Gujarat polls. We can understand the worries of Modi but a PM is supposed to take action and not level allegations. Gujarat has become even more important than Kashmir. Until yesterday, Pakistan was interfering in Kashmir and China was interfering in Leh, Ladakh and Arunachal Pradesh,” it said.
