Shamli, Dec 25: Barely a day after a minor incident of Hindu-Muslim clash was reported from Meerut, another case of religion-based conflict has erupted from Shamli village falling in the communally sensitive district of Muzaffarnagar. The head of Shamli’s Hindu Ashram, Maharaj Yashveer went on a vitriolic mode on Friday as he not only slammed the Muslim community living in the region but also insulted Prophet Muhammad while addressing a Mahapanchayat (grand congregation of district Hindus).Also Read - After MP and UP, Gujarat Assembly Passes 'Love Jihad' Bill Penalising 'Unlawful' Religious Conversion Through Marriage

The Mahapanchayat was called to discuss the alleged the case of ‘Love Jihad’ where a Hindu girl of Kandhla is accused of being lured away by a Muslim man of the neighbouring district. Maharaj Yashveer lashed out at the local Muslims accusing them of provoking the majoritarian community in the region. Apart from insulting the Prophet, he warned Muslims of dire consequences and advised them to reminisce the 2013 Muzaffarnagar riots. “Muslims should mend their ways or else they should remember what Hindus did to them in Kawal and Meerapur (parts of Muzaffarnagar) where thousands of Muslims were rushed into refugee camps within 16 hours,” Yashveer said in the Mahapanchayat. Meanwhile, the Muslims in the Shamli turned furious and gheraoed the Kandhla police station in Shamli demanding immediate arrest of Yashveer for attempting to vitiate the communal atmosphere. “We demand immediate arrest of the Maharaj and demand the police to charge him under National Security Act (NSA),” said local Muslim leader Maulana Etramul Hasan.

Superintendent of Police Vijay Bhushan has assured that swift action will be taken against Yashveer. “We have begin inquiry in the case. Yashveer will be arrested shortly,” he was quoted as saying by regional newspapers.

Rampant communalization is on display in the state of Uttar Pradesh as the Vishwa Hindu Parishad has relaunched its ‘Ram Mandir’ campaign with a fresh vigour. From various pockets of the state, Hindu-Muslim conflicts are reported. For right-wing socio-political outfits, the time is ripe to sow seeds of enmity between communities.
