New Delhi: Rebel Congress leader Shehzad Poonawalla has challenged Rahul Gandhi to undergo lie detector test while claiming that he himself witnessed Nirav Modi meeting the grand old party chief in 2013. His attack came few hours after Congress spokesperson Randeep Surjewala said that Nirav Modi was seen with PM Modi before he fled the country.
Talking to news agency ANI, Poonawalla said, “Mr. Rahul Gandhi, I challenge you. I am witness to you meeting Nirav Modi in Sept 2013 at a Hotel and during this time Nirav Modi and his uncle (Mehul Choksi) got loans from banks. I am ready to undergo a lie detector test. Are you ready to take challenge?

Earlier in the day, Surjewala accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of helping the absconders. His comment came a day after Vijay Mallya told the reporters outside London Court that he had met the FM before leaving India.
Both Nirav Modi and Mehul Choksi are being under scanner by central agencies after Punjab National Bank (PNB) complaint about a scam alleging that they cheated the public sector bank to the tune of Rs 13,000 crore, in collaboration with few employees of the bank.
For those unversed, the PNB detected the multi-crore scam this year, wherein Nirav and his uncle-cum-business-partner Mehul Choksi had allegedly cheated the bank to the tune of USD 2 billion, with the purported involvement of a few employees of the bank.
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has also filed a 12000-page charge sheet against Nirav Modi and 23 others, including his father Deepak Modi, brother-in-law Maiank Mehta, sister Purvi Mehta, brother Neeshal Modi and Nehal Modi.
ED has also filed a charge sheet against Gitanjali Gems owner Mehul Choksi under Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). The press release issued by ED had stated, “Three companies of Mehul Choksi namely Gitanjali Gems Ltd, Gili India Ltd, and Nakshatra Brand Ltd have got fraudulently issued LOUs to the tune of Rs 3011.39 crore and fraudulently got the credit limits of FLCs enhanced to the tune of Rs 3086.24 crore. The total proceeds of crime, in this case, is Rs 6097.63 crore.”
